Types of PC Security Threats

While we would love to assume our time spent on the computer would not be one that is marred by various problems associated with security threats, the fact remains that there are scores upon scores of security threats that present a perpetual assault on our ability to have a safe time sitting at the computer. Some may even be shocked to discover the sheer amount of security threats that a computer use may have to contend with. For those that are curious as to what are the most common types of PC security threats one needs to contend with, here is a brief overview of the main ones:

Spyware: This is probably the most common of infections that can invade a computer. Spyware is a program that is secretly downloaded onto your computer where it ‘hides’ and keeps track of all your internet browsing activity. This information is then uploaded to the creator of the spyware where it is used for nefarious marketing purposes. If you ever wondered by you are getting those annoying pop-ups, it is probably because your computer has been infected by a spyware program.

Hijackers: Have you ever visited one website only to discover that you are directed towards another website? If this is the case, you may have been invaded by a hijacker program that is redirecting you towards sites with the hopes of converting you into a customer. Believe it or not, this process does work with some people which is why hijacking programs proliferate in the manner that they do.

Keyloggers: This type of security threat can be considered among the most frightening. Keyloggers track the use of the keyboard and record the strokes. Such programs can be used to appropriate the passwords for various personal sites such as email, credit cards, bank accounts, etc. The presence of such programs in a personal computer can lead to all manner of resultant havoc which is why their presence must always be detected with utmost expediency.

Worms: The name “worm” hardly conjures up positive images about this particular type of malicious program. Worms impact the network in which PCs are connected and can commonly impede the proper and effective operation of the system. Far too often, computer crashes are the result of worm infestations that spread throughout the network.

Adware: These are programs that end up installed in the computer for the purpose of advertising something. More irksome than malicious, most people would probably find their computer experience a lot easier without the presence of adware.

Hackers: Yes, the threat of hackers is one that looms in the background but it does exist. Hackers are those individuals that are purposefully and deliberately trying to gain access to your computer in order to appropriate its sensitive information. Since hackers are actual human beings seeking a nefarious purpose, they remain one of the most serious security threats a PC owner could face.

There are other types of threats a computer may face and these are among the most common. To minimize their impact, it is most definitely advised to install antivirus firewall software which can eliminate such errant intrusions from occurring.
